My computer loads slow from the splash screen

My computer reboots from the splash screen prior to the
sign in slowler than normal. Sometime my applications
freeze.

My computer has
AMD ATHLON XP 2000 Processor 1.66 GIghertz
1 GB RAM
80 GB HDD 28%used 45% free

I have 16.6 GIG of video and graphics files.
I have been told that bad video and graphics files could
slow down the computer.

What can I do to improve system performance and speed?
What program can I download that remove bad junk files
from my computer? Before I remove anything questionable
junk files off my hard drive is there a program that can
do it for me? Please help.

Hi Joseph,

Are you running Windows XP Home or Pro?

Hello,

I'm running XP Home. I ran Norton Anti-virus and Stinger
and House call online anti-viruses that found nothing.
I ran ad-aware and spybot that removed any offending
spyware.I ran defrag and scan disc.
I removed allot of programs from the start up menu as well
as a few from add/remove which I never used. That seemed to
help a bit.

However since my computer reloads slowly from even before
the splash screen and sign on screen , I have been told
that the issue could be a physical hard disc memory
problem. Not enough free hard disc space.
My HDD capacity is:
74.5 GIB
28.8 used
45.7 GIB free
1.66 GIGHERTZ Athlon processor
1 GIG RAM
I have 16.6 GIG of video and graphics files.
I have been told that bad video and graphics files could
slow down the computer. I know I should download the video
files on CD.

I had disabled Windows System restore option (A big
mistake since I relied on Norton's GoBack) so I cannot
restore to a previous safe point.
I do not want to reformat since that is a total bitch.

Thanks for all of your help in advance.
