My computer is running very slow

I have an AMD Athlon 3.0GHz with 512 MB RAM running
Windows XP. Over the past week or so it has been running
incredibly slow, not just for internet work, but for
games which previously worked great. I have downloaded
the latest service packs and virus scans, all with no
luck. Any other ideas?
