very very very slow boot: click, click, whirrrr, click, click, whi

Hi.
Here’s my problem.
I am running Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Dell Latitude C840,
Pentium 4-M CPU 2.0 GHz, 768 MB RAM.
All of a sudden, it takes about 5 minutes or more to boot. It starts doing
this slow “click-click-click whirrrr†thing. This never happened before. That
sound goes on a for a while. It happens as well when shutting down or
hibernating. While it's happening, nothing else can happen. I have scanned
for spyware, viruses, bots without success. I installed Registry Booster and
fixed 250 registry errors without benefit. I have a firewall, pop-up
blockers, spam blockers, and Spyware Blaster. I put on WinTasks 5 but didn’t
see anything inappropriate and ran Speedupmypc with no discernible benefit
from that point of view. As far as I can tell, after the whole booting and
closing thing, everything is generally working OK, though I have occasional
but not constant unexplained crashes.
Apparently there is no way to be running Win Tasks while booting, so I
could see what if anything is causing this incredible delay.
If you have any ideas, I would be most appreciative.
