"My Computer" hangs for 1-2 minutes

When I open Windows Explorer to click on My Computer, it hangs for 1-2
minutes before it displays the drives. This happens everytime. I tried
disconnecting the CD Drive and any mapped networks but this didn't solve the
problem. Does anybody know what I should try next or what the problem could
be? Many thanks for your attention and any advice you can give me.

On the off-chance that it might be attempting a network connection, see
if the problem persists when you unplug the network cable.

This might also be a sign of disk problems. Try running a disk check
(R-Click on disk -> Properties -> Tools -> Check Now)
Select all options. The disk check will occur on the next reboot.

Firstly, thank you for your replies,

I have pulled out the network cable and used Checkdisk upon reboot all to no
avail.
Regarding the performance tweaks, do you have any specific tweaks in mind
that is on the list?

Thank you again,

David
