On start up the icons appear in My Computer but after a few minutes the
program freezes with no icons appearing in the bx.Why?

It could be about anything, Malware, spyware, virus, bad video card,
bad RAM, cooling problems. I would try to boot to Safe mode and see
what happens. A successful boot to Safe Mode would suggest the
problem is not hardware or over-heating. If you have trouble with
booting into Safe mode, you might review and recent hardware upgrades
or repairs. Have you recently added RAM to this system, updated the
video driver, etc?
I'd also open the case and see if the CPU fan is working and perhaps
blow out any accumulation of dust. Sometimes, those boxes get really
packed with dust after years of use.
If the computer is stable within Safe mode, then I would suggest you
begin to check for malware with some of the standard tools. I'd use
these tools within Safe mode.
