My computer freezes up when I open Word 2000, what can I do?

When I try to open Word, the logo comes up and that's it - everything is
frozen and I need to turn the computer off at the switch. Ctrl-Alt-Del
doesn't even work. Looking at suggestions from other websites, it seems I
might have corrupted templates as I can open Word from Run in the start-up
menu - typing I forget what. They suggest then renaming the normal.dot file
to normal.old or something - but they don't mention how to find this file.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

You can always use Windows Explorer to search for it.

It is probably in C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
