My Computer Folder showing incorrect Display

I Think this is a WindowsXP Question and not IE 6.x. When I clicked on my C
Drive to open the C;\Folder....I kept getting a SEARCH dispaly as opposed to
seeing the Folders....as I had in the Past. With assistance I was pointed to
TOOLS/FODER OPTIONS/VIEW FILES/under the Extension Column....the symbol of a
Hard drine...to the right of it under Tile Types Column NONE......file types
DRIVE...... The assistance was to enter a New action "OPEN" (1st letter
Underlined). This did correct the problem, when I click on Local Drive C the
Folders now appear as opposed to SEARCH. Any explanation as to why suddenly
the Folder was opening with SEARCH instead of the Folders as it had done
forever? Was the corrective steps the right way to correct the Problem?

When you click on this DRIVE extension it read OPEN WITH "To Change settings
that affect all drive Files, Click Advance". When you click Advance, the
'Edit File Type" Window Opens and under Actions I have Explorer, Open & find
(Explorer & Open have the 1st letters underlined).

This Edit Window has 4 Buttons on the right, NEW/EDIT/REMOVE/DEFAULT. No
matter what ACTION I click on, the EDIT and REMOVE Buttons NEVER become
ACTIVE. I entered an iten in this Window I want to remove, how do I remove
the ACTION when the REMOVE Button will not become ACTIVE?

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
the File Types dialog.

Click Start | Run and type or copy/paste this command:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Click OK

Your instructions using that command worked great, but then I am sure you
knew it would. The Actions are still in the File Edit Window....and the EDIT
and REMOVE Button are still inactive. Is there no way to REMOVE the ACTIONS?
Will they cause problems? Whay caused the problem to begin with (orginal
problem was...click on Drive C a SEARCH Window would open as opposed to
seeing the Folders.

Thank You

You're welcome. I listed the general reason why. "This problem occurs when
you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via the File Types dialog."
You could have made the changes or you did something like added the
"Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory" feature for folders.

And how do I Remove the Actions in the File Type Edit Window? Again, when I
highlight any of those Actions......(find, Open,Explorer)......neither the
EDIT or REMOVE button activates ( seems silly to have Edit and Remove in this
Window if they can not be used for thoses purposes....Edit or Remove)

Look under these keys in the registry:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

Delete the subkeys associated with the commands you wish to remove.

The 'Delete' option is unavailable to prevent accidental deletion of essential actions for folders.
Whether or not it is available is controlled by the 'EditFlags' value found in the registry for that
type.

See:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...ll/reference/enums/filetypeattributeflags.asp

for possible flag values.

The assistance provided has been excellent, and I thank You.

I followed your Indtructions;

* Under Directory\Shell.....I saw "find" but not the other two
&Explorer\&Open). Under find I saw Command and ddeexe. Delete this "find"
Key?

* Under Folder\Shell...I saw Explorer (under it command), ddeexec and under
ddeexec was.....Appl, ifexec, Topic. I also saw Open and under it....command
and ddeexec. Did not see the action "find". Delete the Explorer and ddeexec
and Open keys (or just the Explorer and Open Keys...leave ddeexec)

* Now under Drive\Shell......I saw the three Actions listed "&Explorer",
"&Open", and "find". Delete all 3 keys? (This area was clear I was seeing
exactly what I wanted to delete from the File Types Actions Edit Window)

Leave these alone as well.

Delete the 'Explore' and 'Open' keys.

On a fresh install of Windows, 'Directory' & 'Drive' types only have the 'Find' action defined.
They are 'subsets' if you will, of the 'Folder' type, and use the 'Open' and 'Explore' actions
defined under 'Folder'.

This has been a very valuable learning experience and I thank both of you for
your assistance. When this problem was first noticed, I tried using
WindowsXP Restore to go back to a Restore point to correct the problem; I
tried 3 different restore points on different days. After Windows Restore
Ran I would get the message similar to Incomplete...or unable to complete. I
have not tried restore again, its about not fixing what is not broken.
However, would the problem I encountered with displaying Folders properly,
and your Command corrected, would this also have been the reason WindowsXP
Restore would not Run?

Not likely that the two are related.

However, it sound like System Restore has become corrupted & you should fix that so it's available
in the future. Fortunately, the fix is simple: disabling & then reenabling System Restore.

To disable System Restore, click on Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and then
System Applet, and follow the steps below:

1.
On the System Applet, Click the System Restore tab

2.
Select Turn off System Restore

3.
Click OK, then click Yes to initiate the restore point purging process.

4.
To re-enable System Restore, clear the Turn-Off System Restore check box from the same location

It is unlikely the two problems are related. System restore can get messed
up all on it's own. See this link for excellent info on system restore,
troubleshooting steps and how to keep it healthy.

Both of you have been so helpful I thought I would respond letting you know
that the problem preventing WindowsXP from Running was as a result of Norton
Internet Secutities 2006. I did turn off....and back On restore.....and a
few days later tried to use Restore....but got the same results..."your
Computer cannot be Restoted". With the Norton Symantec Resource Protection
Feature on, it prevents Restore from running. You must turn off this
feature, then you can run Restore......and then you must turn it Back on to
continue to be protected. After turning the Protection off, Restore ran
fine. I wonder how many users who experienced this problem with
restore.....re-installed Windows thinking the install was Bad.

Hadn't heard of that before, but I do know a lot of people avoid Norton.
