my clock on my vista does not work properly

Guest

I cannot find the way to fix the clock on my Windows Vista. It does not show
the proper time and it is always behind the actual time. I need to adjust it
manually at least three times a day. How could it be fixed, so it will not be
so annoying?

Windows Vista follows time from the computer mainboard,
every once in a while (weekly usually) it will re-synchronize
with a remote time server or a domain controller if there is one.

For your issue..check the little battery on mainboard (cmos battery),
also check power supply voltages if recharging battery correctly.
pcwizard2007 will show system voltages and power
can also be seen in mainboard BIOS (check manual)

Use a different NTP server in the Internet Time tab. The default NTP
servers are overloaded and do not work for me.

Find one that is close to you on the globe, and has a low ping time from
your location.

Most MOBO CMOS batteries are not rechargeable, so replacement should be
done. So far all of mine have been CR2032 Lithium batteries availed almost
anywhere that sells batteries.

I've had the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 1501. When the 'Internet
Time' settings tries to sync with the Internet Time server, I get an error
message that says: "An error occured while Windows was synchronizing with
time-nw.nist.gov"

The same error message occurs with all the other sych options. Finally I
choose to just not have it try to sych automatically. Still losing about 5
minutes a week on the clock. I'm beginning to really dislike Vista.

Consider changing the battery - Regarding part of your post "..I need to
adjust it manually at least three times a day...." - when the time is set,
and as long as the computer is "on" it should not change - unless you are
shutting doan and booting several times a day.

Dislike Vista as you choose. The time is maintained by the CMOS. Think
about it, how is an operating system dormant on a hard disk going to keep
time? I assume you know you need to have the system connected to update
time on the internet. most default to time.windows.com and I haven't had
any problems with syncronisation.

I've also tried all the different time server options but
I am getting an error message about it trying to sync with all the different
sites available. This isn't a big issue with me its just
frustrating. You would think with modern technolgy as advanced as it is, a
$1000.00+ machine would be able to keep the correct time.

I would try to change your battery, as the first option and what are the
chances you have a firewall that is blocking your access. What country are
you in? Maybe there is someone who knows what port is being used for this
function and if it is different than normal internet traffic.

You will undoubtedly get suggestions to change the motherboard
battery. Before you do so, be aware of the following:

Before anyone whose clock is running slow rushes out to buy a new
battery, he should first take note of whether he is losing time while
the computer is running or while it's powered off. If it's while
powered off, the problem *is* very likely the battery. But if it's
while running, it can *not* be the battery, because the battery isn't
used while the computer is running.

I also have to reset me clock 2-3 times a day, depending on how long I have
it on. I can sync with 2 of the 5 sites to get it the right time (one is
'time-a.nist.gov'), but 3 hours later, while the computer still is on, I will
be 2-3 minutes slow again. I have seen where you can download a fix for this
if you have a wireless mouse. But alas, mine has a cord, (not even USB) It
seems awful funny that so many people have this problem with a brand new
computer. (Mine is a Medion, came with Vista Home Premuin pre-installed) I
have and AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60 GHz. 1919 MB RAM
on a 32-bit Operating System. It really makes you wonder what else is worng
if they can't get the clock to work while the computer is on. Any suggestions
will be considered helpful. Thank you.

To me, that is not a Vista problem., Rather a hardware one.
I have run, and still do, several computers on Windows, and my
clock is always accurate.

How about providing some information...
Is this a home computer, or one in a domain?
What time server are you connecting to?
Have you tried a different time server, like time-b.nist.gov?

chanook*xyz* I had the same problem also. My vista clock gain 7 min every 5
days. A tech had me uninstall the
ATI catalyst control center and reinstall with updates. Success, it worked
and have had no trouble since then. I don't know whether or not this helps
anyone--all I know is that it worked for me - I have vista home basic-32b
