Adding a clock in the welcome screen....

G

Guest

Right now i'm useing vista beta 2 bulid 5384. It's the first vista bulid i've
ever used. I've notice that the welcome screen doesn't have a clock. I think
it would be a great idea to have a cock for those who arn't loged in and have
the welcome screen up, they can tell what time it is. i under stand the Alpha
bulids ( 3xxx ) had a clock. Why was that feature removed?

Most people wear wrist-watches, so I do not see the need of having a
clock on the welcome screen to tell what the time is.

I stopped wearing a watch when I started wearing a Cell phone with a
time display.
How hard would it be to include the time on the pre-logon screen saver
/ login bar? Sure would be a lot more useful than just the floating
"Windows" tm

Having the login screen display a clock is nice - after all people do
usually install wall clocks in their offices. This would be just a form
of wall clock, essentially.

You "wear" a cellphone?

That would be pretty trivial. You can set the scrolling text screensaver
to be a clock, but it won't be a nice analog one. That's the main
problem. I guess you could download a 3rd party clock.

Well the early 3xxx bulids had one, why was it removed?

plus you have it in the sidebar, taskbar, why not add it to a 3rd spot in
the OS?

Haven't worn a watch in years. Cell phone gives me the time and I don't have
to change it when I cross time zones. That said, I see nothing extravegant
about the poster's question or desire to have a clock on the Welcome screen.

It may not be needed to have a clock on the login screen, however there
should be an option for people who do want it. It should at least be in some
part of the code, that way skinners can add the feature to their login if
they choose to do so.

I expect they considered any running code before the login to be a
security risk and that's why it was eliminated. Although, if a hacker can
upload a compromised clock to the system, then I'd say the system is
already compromised.

It would be nice to hear the back story on the clock though.

/still misses the way picking a timezone worked in W95.

WRONG (ish)
In my last few jobs over 20 years
1)The only visible clock was at the Secretary station over 100 feet
away. Vi sable, yes, a round splotch on the wall.
2)On the reception desk (personal), Presidents office (one of those
awards that has a clock)
3) In the Hardware store. In places not visible from the computer

On my belt of my trousers (that is what a belt clip is for).
I used to WEAR a Watch on my wrist.

Does the screen save marquee work if you LOG OUT?
IIRC it only works if you LOCK or hit the preset timeout.

*I* wear a cell phone.
I don't know what time piece, if any the OP uses.

I see no good reason for a time display NOT to be included
on the pre-logged in screen.
It *is* inconvenient to 'glance' at my Cell phones time display.
I see no useful purpose in those miss named things called "screen
Savers". They neither save the Screen nor save Energy when enabled.
At least displaying the time might be a useful function.

It isn't quite the same thing. The clock on the taskbar and the sidebar are
visible when you are using your computer... not just sitting there, inactive,
waiting for a simple password to login. The whole point of the login screen
is to login, not to keep you occupied.

How long do you sit there staring at the logon screen anyway? There isn't
much to look at, and a clock would just be clutter (like adding more life
boats to Titanic...)

There is nothing wrong with adding a setting to add the clock, should you
want one. However, it is easier to just enter the password. It doesn't take
that long to sign in.

Screen savers are way legacy. You're right screen savers serve no real
purpose anymore.

A clock on the pre-load 'welcome' screen is just added clutter, imho.

ok, now whats the story behind the clock in bulid 3683.

http://winsupersite.com/images/reviews/lh_alpha_004.gif

now i know that was an alpha bulid but still part of the vista life time......
and I appreate the answers that are real. so thatnks to the ones that gave
me those...for the ones that didnt i don't care about the titanic or watches
or cell phones.....

It was just a sugestion, a little convo....

I see. I was wondering where they would put a clock, because the way they
have it now a clock would look weird just stuck somewhere.

I like the clock from that screenshot, but where would they actually put it
in the current login screen? Looks like they would have to completely re-do
the login screen.

I'd say the bottom left (or is it right), by the accessibilities button.
Suppose a digital clock, with a transparent background wouldn't be to yuck. I
just hate having huge amounts of clutter... 10 years from now, the OS will
probably have as much clutter as the retail boxes *shudders*
