My 1.7GHz Celeron runs at 203MHz!

I have a IBM ThinkPad, which suddenly runs very slow.

On the General tab on System Properties it says:

Computer:
Mobile Intel(R)
Celeron(R) CPU 1.70Ghz
203Mhz, 496MB of RAM

Some times it says 1.70Ghz in the last line (and then it runs fast)... but I
can't find a way to force it to run at 1.70GHz.

Is this a Hardware error or a Software configuration.

I have all XP patches installed.

Thanks Thomas

Your system BIOS controls your CPU speed.
Windows XP only uses what it is told you have.

Try going to intel.com,downloads,processors,software,download and
install the processor frequency id utility, make sure you select the correct
utility, then run it.If it matches 203mhz then you probably need to replace
it.

It doesn't make any different whether it is using Power or Battery.

The funny thing is though, that my Battery only holds for 20 minutes, where
it used to last around 2 hours. This started around the same time.

I just cant figure out whether to reinstall Windows XP or send my computer
for a reparation. I guess I try the first, and if it doesn't help send it
back for reparation.

I was hoping that it was as setting in XP Somewhere.

Hi Thomas,

Just wondering, does this occur in Safe Mode or other accounts if any?

Hello Bert

The last couple of days it has been running at full speed, but now it is
back to 203MHz, so I thought I would try your suggestions.

Guess what in Safe Mode it runs at full speed.

Then I tried creating a new user account... guess what. It runs at full
speed.

I can log on using the old user account and get a slow machine... then using
XP's fast user switching to the new user it the runs at full speed again
(whiteout logging of the old user). So when I switch forth and back my
computer runs fast and slow!!! This is weird.

Anyway. I guess my problem is solved... I can just delete my user account
and create a new. I haven't done that yet, so if you have questions I can
try.

But Bert... thanks for you suggestion.

Hi Thomas,

Considering the problem is intermittent I would say creating a new
account is the way to.

Maybe this is caused by battery consumption reduction
technology Try checking CPU speed while having your
computer plugged in DC power "Andrew E."
Try going to
intel.com,downloads,processors,software,download and
install the processor frequency id utility, make sure
you select the correct utility, then run it.If it
matches 203mhz then you probably need to replace it.

Hi, I know this problem. Select from the Power Properties (Display
properties, under the screen saver tab) that your computer is Desktop not a
Laptop/Protable. You should find that the speed comes full back on. Seems
windows scales down the clock using the Intel speed-step tech. to conserve
power or reduce heat or something. I had this on all my Thinkpads and it
worked fine.
P.S. My latest T42p which is 2.1G showed 567MHz (!)

Correct me if I'm wrong but........The celeron doesn't have speed step or
does it. Just the Pentium M
