I have to machines on the same workgroup both on XP home (SP2). Just
recently, and this has not happend before, when trying to view my laptops
files from the PC i was asked to basically login. I did the same from the
laptop to the PC and was not asked.

It was asking for a password that I did not know, so i was unable to vewi
the file.

Is there any reason why this has happend and any way that I can fix it?

I do not mind having to supply a password but I just need to be able to
change the password so i can veiw the files.

Thanks,

Erik

i was wondering how did you get make it so that you have to put a password in
to access files in network folders because i really nned to figure that out i
want only some of the admins to have access to the admin files but not all of
them so if you know how you got this feature enabled please tell me.

Erik,

Is the Guest account enabled, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net user guest
/active:yes" in the command window?

If that's not it, look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>
<http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm>

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

XP Home uses the Guest account to control access to its shared disks
and folders.

Make sure that the Guest account is enabled for Network access by
entering this line at the command prompt:

net user guest /active:yes

Make sure that there's no network password for the Guest account:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
3. Click Guest.
4. Click Reset Password.
5. Click OK without entering a new password.

Thanks,

Seems as though that worked!
Do you know why it started to ask me for the password all of a sudden?

You're welcome. Somehow, the Guest account was disabled for network
access and/or had a password defined. I can't tell you how.
