Must Shutdown/Restart/Logoff twice, to be successful

I have had this problem for a long time, so I don't remember when and how it
originated. Whenever I go to Logoff, Restart, or Shutdown, the sound plays
and nothing happens. After investigation, I realize that when the
Shutdown/Logoff/Restart button is pressed, it eliminates 4-6 processes from
the task manager, and the XP returns to its normal operating state.

I compared both task manager lists, before and after, and determined that
none of the files looked all that suspicious.

wlan_cfg.exe -my wireless internet adapter file
atiptxexx.exe -ATI Graphics Card File
Realsched.exe -RealPlayer autoupdater
Point32.exe -driver file for optical mouse
svchost.exe -there are usually 1 to 2 of these eliminated with the first
attempt

I do know that there is malware that will adds svchost.exe's, but I can't be
sure whats legit and whats not.

Anybody have a diagnosis?

I see a less annoying version of this.

When I use WMConnect (a re-sold AOL) then all Restart or Shutdown does is
stop the WMConnect process. I have to Restart or Shutdown again to
actually turn the machine off.

Somehow, WMConnect interferes with the shutdown process.
