Must boot in "Enable VGA Mode" to see screen

I've exhausted all user groups and websites Google could find before posting . . .

I can only see the screen when I select "Enable VGA Mode" while pressing F8 during boot up

I assume the problem must lie in the video card or monitor

I upgraded to XP Pro from Windows 98 SE on a Gateway Performance 500 (PIII at 500 MHz)

I have a nVidia Riva TNT2/TNT2 Pro video card with 16 MB.

I have a Gateway FPD1500 flat screen monitor (part number 7001707) that is enabled as a Plug and Play monitor in my settings

The video BIOS settings (which are the same as while using Win 98 SE) are
* Palette Snooping: Disabled (other option is Enabled
* AGP Aperture Size: 64 MB (other option is 256 MB
* Default Primary Video Adapter: AGP (0ther option is PCI

I am at a complete loss on what to do!

I ran the XP compatability test before installing XP Pro which did not detect any issues. Of course I am using XP Pro now but only through the Enable VGA Mode work around

Do I have any hope?

Try downloading and installing the latest driver from the manufacturer.

I have downloaded the only nVidia driver for XP from the nVidia site (which so happens to not be certified for XP), but when I reboot, I still am unable to view the screen unless in Enable VGA Mode.

As for the monitor, I am unable to find any XP driver for the FPD1500 and thus am using the standard monitor

Any other suggestions?

*Please help! *

Treyster,

I had the same problem and came accross this posting in google, whic
by the way did not help me at all :)

It took me a while but I finally got it to work. I'm going to list al
the things I did and you can try some or all of them until hopefull
you can fix it. You might just do it all in the order I did it, sinc
some of the things I think were a waste of time were probably part o
the solution.
These are the actual relevant ones aside from the little stupid thing
you try that dont work and when is working you realize were a waste o
time.

1) Updated the video card driver to xp.
2) updated the monitor drivers (did a google search and found those
driversguide.com
3) Uninstalled the video card ( yes , this is weird , but after I di
that it started working.)

3 simple steps that took all damn day to figure out.

Hope you get yours working

I struggled with this for weeks, downloaded huge new driver packages
from NVidia, to no avail. Then I pulled the card, wiped out the
drivers, restarted, let the system autodetect the card, and...
success!?

The problem is with the Riva TNT2 drivers, but the solution is
counterintuitive -- do NOT install the latest drivers. The only driver
that I can get to work with my system (FPD1500, Riva TNT2, XP Pro SP1)
is the one supplied by Microsoft (i.e., the one that autodetects on
first install). The version is 5.1.2001.0, dated 7/1/01; specifically,
NV4.sys version 5.01.2001.1240 (ReleasedBinaries.010717-0141).

You have to forego some of the nice features of the updated NVidia
software, but I was willing to trade those for a system that worked.
