Music Folder Thumbnails

I have ripped All my 200 + cd's to my hard over the years.
Under Xp I could rt click the folder for each album and point it to a scaned
jpg image
and the folder would show that as the content. This made it real eaisy to
locate and not have to read every folder..

Under Vista these folders somtimes show images pertaining to its content
but the number that don't way out number the ones that do...

I still have all the jpg in the same folder and would like to repoint them ,
they were hidden before so the inside of the folder were just my MP3s...

I've tried many things...

Please help me reclaim order to these folders.

Does each image reside in the folder you want it applied to? Does each
image have a unique name?

Most likely the folders that show the pic you want without intervention have
the image named 'folder.jpg'. If a file of that name exists within a
folder, it is automatically used as the folder picture.

Each image has a unique name. Usually the name of the album.

I forgot to mention that SOME of the images that "are" showing up are not
mine... Right Album cover kinda (differnt re-release of older album) .

I am assuming when you say "folder.jpg" you are saying for instance one
folder would be Some Girls. Now the image inside IS "somegirlsfront.jpg"..

Should I rename the file Some Girls.jpg or folder.jpg?

And this is in a effort to get them displayed on my pc while viewing all the
folders on the hard drive. NOT on Media player thru xbox360.

My Pc has 4 hard dives in it.
one hd for music
one for video
one for os Vista
One for OS XP Proffessional

Could the photos that are not mine be result of Media player 11?

Very likely. If you set explorer to show hidden files & not hide protected
OS files, you'll probably see a folder.jpg file.

Windows Media Player 11 will, by default, replace your album art with its
own choice for album art. Saving your scanned, high quality images is
nearly pointless. If you turn off all Internet access in the Options, and
there are a lot of them, it will leave the image but it will always resize
your album art to 200x200 pixels. I have been told this is for
compatibility with some un-name, un-determined portable media devices that
may or may not have ever been sold. But if you ever do stumble on one of
the, you'll be pleased to know that Windows Media Player won't support but
at least you'll also know that it isn't the size of the album art causing
the problem. :) I am told that the reason larger images worked in XP and
WMP 10 was that it was a bug... but they fixed the bug really good. There's
no way at all you can display high quality album art in Windows Media Player
any longer.

If you enable Windows Media Player to retrieve data from the Internet, it
will find album art for most, if not all, of your albums - even if that
album art isn't always correct or even for the correct band.

It will name those images Folder.jpg, FolderSmall.jpg, and a couple
corresponding files with a GUID in the name. They will all be marked System
and Hidden. You will have to enable the display of both in Folder Options
to see them.

If you want to protect your scanned album art, first, BACKUP! Then, if you
want to replace Windows Media Player's 200x200 pixel (they call that large,
I call it miniscule) album art, you'll have to set the NTFS ACLs on your
replacement version of Folder.jpg so that NO ONE - NOT EVEN YOU can access
the files for anything but read access.

When you have the Folder.jpg image in your album folders, either from WMP 11
or your own scanned versions, that image will be used as the folder image in
Explorer. Though I really dislike the Vista folder. You can't see the
whole image like you could in XP. This is one of the few things I don't
like about Vista.

I've said it before, Windows Media Player 11 sucks. Its handling of album
art is but one of many reasons why Windows Media Player sucks. :)

Dale

STOP! Make sure you don't rename your scans to Folder.jpg without backing
them up first! In every single instance, and other than setting permissions
as I described in my other response, Windows Media Player 11 will shrink
your custom scan to 200x200 pixels if you rename them to Folder.jpg.

Wow

NOW I've found that SOME of the songs with in these folders like cd singles
have the image themselves of the album art rather than lets say the normal
winamp logo.
It's the cover with a small Winamp logo in the bottom right hand corner..

What is causing this?

It's COOL

That's a feature of Windows Explorer in Vista. It is kind of cool except in
an album where all the tracks have the same cover, it makes it harder to
tell the media files from the album art files in thumbnail view. I'm still
undecided on how I feel about this one. :)

I read this thread with interest, I can't seem to get my folders to display
any picture on them unless they are called folder.jpg.

I have deleted the desktop.ini and thumbs file from the folders as well
which makes no difference, any ideas?

D

Dale

Make sure your view is set to Medium Icons or larger. Then, right-click any
folder, select properties, and then the Customize tab. From there you can
select any picture on your hard drive that you want to be the folder image.
Unfortunately, Vista Explorer insists on hiding the image in that stupid
vertical open folder rather than the flat view folder from XP - the vertical
open folder is one of the stupidest changes in Vista. The path for the
image you set is added to the Desktop.ini file in the folder your
customizing.

That's all there is to it.

Alternatively, add Folder.jpg to the folder and it will be picked up
automatically. Desktop.ini settings override the default use of Folder.jpg.
