MUP.sys hangs at boot

Just a note for a quick fix:
Laptop user was using external USB hdd. Rebooted to black screen, no
progress.
I had user turn off laptop (hold power butoon 5 secs), unplug all
devices and power, and remove battery.
Wait five minutes. Restart. Boot!

I know it won't fix all, but this is a simple one to test.

Another possible fix?
I've just spent several days repeatedly re-installing XP Home on a machine
which had a different problem but then wouldn't go into safe mode with it
stopping at mup.sys
Other forums are full of problems with this, with no end of offered
solutions so here's one more.

I formatted the drive, reinstalled XP, then re-installed each bit of
software which had been on there before, going back and checking that I could
safe boot each time. In my case it turned out to be Nero. It's an OEM
version which came bundled with the CD/DVD drive. I uninstalled it, and
clicked 'yes' when it moaned about deleting shared files, and safe boot
worked again. As a double check, I installed it again, and safe boot stopped.

The only info I have off the CD is that it's OEM Suite for DVD re-writers
only = Nero Express 6, Incd 4, Nerovision express 2 plus a few other bits. I
can't be bothered to try installing each individual bit to isolate it - I've
flung the CD in the corner. I've installed Roxio with the same drive and
it's working a dream. I also got a CD at the same time with PowerDVD on it
and that's fine.

Not a fix for every one, but may help...
