John

I've been experiencing some moderate problems with
Windows XP professional. I "think" these are related to a
worm/virus found on my system but it wasn't the
Blaster/lovesan worm although some of the same symptoms
existed. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of the
worm/virus.

Currently my PC is virus/spyware/adware free (verified
from KAV, NAV, F-prot, ad-aware, spybot, hijackthis). My
pc is always up to date on updates (even before the most
recent worm/virus).

Here is my laundry list:

1) drop drag does not work. I've checked a few settings
in the control panel and start menu and things are set to
allow drop and drag. I get a circle with a line through
it when I try to drag files.
2) IE has a few problems. First, it will not link to the
windows update using the start menu icon but it will work
if I pull down the tools menu. IE will not connect to
certain websites (like this newgroup). I use Opera more
than IE.
3) the search function in the start menu does not work.
When selected nothing happens.
4)My internet (lan) connection dies frequently. At start
up, it takes a few minutes before svchost.exe connects to
the internet but after it does it works for a few minutes
than stops. I usually have to restart the pc or have
windows scan all my system files from a command in run.

I have attempted to solve the problem by:
1) repair installation of XP with no success.
2) toyed around with settings in XP
3) removed any "tweak" computer programs on my pc
4) have windows scan system files (using sfc?) which
works temporarily.
5) Searched and searched the internet for HOURS for
solutions.

I believe these symptoms cluster around the same problem.
They all started to happen at about the same time. Any
suggestions welcome!
Thanks,
John
