multiple XP pro problems

First, I cannot access the internet. When I click on IE, I get an error
message and login.passport.com tries to start downloading files. The help
and support link in XP does nothing. I just get a white window. The system
restore does not work either, same thing, just a white window. Finally, I
installed Norton AV, but when I try to launch it, I get the same white
window. I ran a pre-virus check on this computer and nothing was found. I
have also used spybot and adaware to remove all malicious programs, of which
there were quite a few. I am working on a fix for this computer for a
friend, but I guess I am not as saavy as I think I am.
Any help ideas out there??
