upon installing xp pro onto my machine, and removing xp home, i seemed to
have installed 2 instances of xp pro on my c: partition... i'm getting the
"please select which OS to load" screen before xp loads... and my 2 choices
are xp pro. the first choice seems to work ok, but the second one, when
chosen, spits out a message like this:

the following file is corrupt
{windows root}\system32\hal.dll

now, when i log into the working instance of xp pro, the file does exist in
my c:\windows\system32\ directory.

so... i was wondering if there was any way for me to get rid of this corrupt
second instance? i've already tried clean installing after formatting the c:
partition. but this second still appears. any thoughts? help please

Hi Ros,

Start/run msconfig, go to the boot.ini tab and click "check all boot paths".
It should offer to remove the invalid one.

Incidentally, to see hal.dll, you need to set the system to see hidden and
system files. Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options, and on the View tab,
set the options so you can see hidden and system files. Specifically:

Enable (check) "Display the contents of system folders"
Enable (check) "Show hidden files and folders"
Disable (uncheck): "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"

I also recommend that you disable (uncheck) "hide extensions for known file
types".
