If in Windows Explorer for instance, and I select 3 Word documents to be
opened, is there a way to force Word to open 3 sessions, and not 3 windows in
the same session?

I think you might be able to do something in WE/Tools/OPtions/File types, but no
guarantees, as this isn't something I've ever actually done:
- select the DOC entry
- click "Change"
- click "Advanced"
- select "Open"
- click "Edit"
- add the /w switch to the command line, after winword.exe" + a space

The \w switch forces a new instance of Word.

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for the response.
Your suggestion unfortunately did not work, but it actually put me on the
right path to a solution; i.e. adding '%1' after 'winword.exe.'
Thanks again.

Hi Cindy,
Please ignore my previous post; it simply isn't true -- apologies.
What I did manage in the mean time, is to upset the system to such an extent
that I cannot at all start any document form WE. I get two simultaneous
messages:
"Cannot find file C:\***.doc (or one of its components). Make sure the path
and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."
"Word cannot open the document. Try one or more of the following etc etc""

Before I can get back to my original request, I need to solve this problem
first. Any ideas?

Re-register Word. I can't remember for sure, but I think for Word97 you need
to:
Start/Run
Type: winword.exe /r

Then let it run. You should get a message that Word has been registered.

As to the original question: if the /w switch isn't doing what you need, then I
don't know of any way to force Word to start a new instance each time.
Microsoft has specifically programmed the Office applications to NOT do that.
The /w switch *does* work from the command line or as part of a short-cut
target, which is why I thought it might work, otherwise.

And when programming code, we generally use the CreateObject function or the
New key word.

Thank you very much Cindy. I ran the 'winword.exe /r' command, and I can now
double-click on a document in WE without getting weird messages, although I
did not get the message saying Word has been re-registerd. But as they say in
the classics: 'All's well that ends well.'
As for the multiple sessions of Word 97, that's a pity. Failing that, are
you aware of a keyboard shortcut then perhaps to jump between multiple open
documents in one Word session? That is, without the use of the mouse.

Ctrl+F6 and Ctrl+Shift+F6 will cycle forward and back through open
documents, or you can access the Window menu with your keyboard: Alt, W,
then the number of the desired document.
