Multiple Processors

We added a second CPU to a server with Windows 2000 Server
and need to update the hardware abstraction layer (HAL)(
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 234558). The Motherboard
is Asus TR-DLS. The current status is ACPI UniProc. We
would think that we should change it to ACPI MultiProc but
Asus site says that it should be MPS Multiproc PC. Which
one should we choose? Article 234558 (Microsoft) says to
contact the computer manufacturer (Asus) to determine
which one to use. We did it and Asus says to contact the
Operating System manufacturer (Microsoft).

234558 HOW TO: Add Support for Multiple Processors in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=234558

HAL Description

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACPI MultiProc Use for a multiple-processor ACPI computer

ACPI UniProc Use for a ACPI multiple-processor board but with a

single processor installed

Advanced Use for a single processor motherboard with single

Configuration processor ACPI computer

Power Interface PC

Compaq Systempro Use for a Compaq Systempro computer

MPS Uniprocessor PC Use on non-ACPI computers dual processor motherboard

with a single processor installed

MPS Multiproc PC Non-ACPI computers with a dual processor running

Standard PC Any Standard PC, non-ACPI, or non-MPS. Could be a 386,

486, Pentium, Pentium II, or Pentium III

Standard PC

with C-Step i486

If your vendor states you need to be using MPS Multiproc, then you probably
have a non-ACPI computer with a dual processor running. That is the correct
HAL you need.

Thank you for your quick respond.

In fact, what Asus spec for the Motherboard TR-DLS says
is "MPS (Multi-Processor Specification) rev 1.4
compliant." The technician I talk to told me to call
Microsoft!

I want to be sure that we should change from ACPI Uniproc
to MPS Multiproc PC.

Thanks again.

If you did a clean install and you ended up with ACPI compliant HAL for
single processor, you're probably okay installing the ACPI multiprocessor
HAL. Again, the "final word" would need to come from your hardware vendor.

HTH,
Daniel
