Multiple problems with IE 6

Neil Guilbeaux

I am having multiple problems with IE6 on a windows 2000
machine.

First problem: Windows update. When the windows update
is about to download files that need to be updated,
nothing happens. The status bar stays at null. I checked
the knowledge base for a solution. I found something but
it did not work.

Second problem: Pop up windows. When a link opens up in
a new window, the window opens up and it looks like it is
doing something but the page never loads. Could not find
anything in the knowledge base about that.

Third problem: Cannot print from IE 6. This problem
affects several computers, all configured the same. One
of the computers gives me an IE script error. Basically
it says that there is an error on line 228 char 1 the
error is "interface not registered" code 0 and URL:
res://c:\winnt\system32\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg. I found
several fixes for this in the knowledge base but not one
of them worked.

Please help!

Thanks,

Neil Guilbeaux

Windows Update problem: See
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

For the other two problems, try, in order:

1. (Re-)Installing 5.6 Scripting Engine from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

4a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

4b. Find the hijacker that caused 4a to be checked:

Dealing with Hijackware

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

As part of the hunt, also update your virus definitions and then run a full
system scan. From now on, do both daily.

I am having the same issue with line 228 char 1 URL:
res://c:\winnt\system32\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg, but this
only occurs when I try to print. I have run IE6 for quite
a while and this only popped up iin the last week. Can
anyone help?

Thanks,
