Multiple Personal Folders

My Outlook has three Personal Folders each containing the same
subfolders. I am sure that I caused this by transferring outlook
files between computers......
Is there any reasonable way to get down to one Personal Folder. My
various choices for closing the excess folders appear grayed out.

At the top level of each set of folders, you should be able to right
click and select "close"

The most reliable method is to create a new mail profile as yours has become corrupt. Control Panel->Mail Icon->Profiles->Add. Do not copy your old corrupt profile. Configure the new one to use your default ..pst file (personal folders file.)

reading.
