Multiple Monitors

I have 2 monitors running on XP Pro. I have just upgraded one of the monitors
and I want to make this new one the primary. However, the other monitor -
which is the primary currently has the boxes for "make this my primary
monitor" and "extend my windows desktop" both ticked but greyed out so i
cannot alter them. The new monitor allows me to tick "extend my windows
desktop", but the box for "make this my primary monitor" is greyed out and I
cannot select it.

I had that problem and don't quite remember how I solved it. I do remember
that it took a week of experimenting to do so.
