Multiple Instances of MS Outlook 2003 in Windows Task Manager

I have begun to see multiple instances of MS Outlook 2003 in the Windows Task
Manager. I have Windows XP. When I shut down, I have to click individual
shut down dialog boxes for each instance before Windows will shut down. Does
anyone know why this is happening? This has only begun to happen in the last
3-4 months and we have had the software for a couple of years. Thanks for
the help.

If Outlook is sticking around in task managers process list, then you need
to look for 3rd party applications that are stopping it from closing. These
applications can be simple things like PDA software (e.g. ActiveSync,
Palm/Chappura's PocketMirror), keeping Word 2003 open after Outlook closes
and Word is the default e-mail editor, Outlook Business Contact Manager
(BCM), to more complicated things like antivirus/antispam or 3rd party
addins like stamps.com, acrobat (not reader), .etc.
