Multiple "Error 1904.Module" Messages during install

K

Kent Smith

My daughter is experiencing problems installing and using
your AntiSpyware (Beta 1) program.

I believe the problem is related to her initial
installation of the program using a 'limited' account.

I have since attempted to remove the AntiSpyware using
the 'administrator' account, but continue to get error
messages while un-installing and re-installing the
AntiSpyware.

Error Message Text:
" Error 1904.Module
<prog.name_from_below> failed to
register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your
support personnel. "

Ten [10] of these error messages are issued, one for each
of the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\GCCollection.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft
AntiSpyware\gcAntiSpywareLibrary.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcASPrivacyLib.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\GCCollection.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcASSoapLib.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcTCPObjLib.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcASThreatAudit.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\shellextension.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft
AntiSpyware\GCSoftwareUpdateLib.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hashlib.dll

At which point the final error screen is displayed:

" Unexpected errror; quitting "

And everything terinates. This error message is also
displayed when AntiSpyware is started - again just before
everything terminates.

cheers,
kent

I see another message referencing this error from "francis" in another
group--announcements, I think.

I asked a small office I relate to which runs in limited user mode on XP Pro
machines to install this app in limited user mode. They reported no issues
with the install and haven't reported error messages since then, so I'm
tending to discount this being related to limited users, necessarily.

Is Antivirus running during the install? Consider trying the install in
safe mode and with real-time scanning by any other security or antivirus
program turned off for the duration of the install?

Make sure that MS AS is not running when you try to reinstall. Open
Task Manager and look for anything starting with "gcas", like
gcasDtServ. Kill them all and then try re-install.

Here's a question:

What happens if you test it by changing the account type for a short period
of time to test?

I have XP Home SP 2 with 3 administrator accounts. I
installed and launched successfully under one account.
When I go to the other 2 accounts then antispyware does
not load on startup. If I launch it from the shortcut I
get "Unexpected error; quitting" message. If I try to
repair from these 2 accounts I get the "Error 1904"
messages.

Are these Limited account? If so, try changing the account type to
Administrator temporarily to test again. Let us know what happens please.

This machine was the third machine I've installed the
AntiSpyware on.

The first my laptop: - XP Home
Second, desktop: - XP Pro
Problem desktop machine: - XP Home

All systems are current with SP2 and all subsequent
updates - All machines running Norton AV 2004 Pro - WHICH
was running on first two machines during the install.

I 'Safe Mode' idea is good, thanks, I will give that a
try with AV disabled.

I mentioned A/V because I did see some interaction between an antivirus
product and the installation routines on some office machines I installed
on. They might have been running some 2005 version of Norton--not sure. It
didn't result in any failures or error messages of the sort the you are
seeing in this case, but it made me think about the issue.

You might also try Googling on the error. Since this beta is based on the
Giant product, which has been out for awhile, there is some tech support
history available on the web, I think. I've seen a resolution for Error
101's in these groups, but that's the only one that I know about.

Interesting. Hmm--if Kent' Smith's machine is XP Home (have to go back and
check the detail)--using Safe mode and signing in as the real administrator
account might fix the issue.

That's wierd--I thought that alternative administrator level accounts had no
permissions problems in terms of files in the profiles, etc--maybe it is the
registry, though.
