multiple entries of some names in e-mail address pick list

When starting an e-mail and picking the "To" button, it shows duplicates for
some people's names. For instance, sometimes it will show it on one row for
their e-mail and again on a separate row for FAX number. Then some people
show twice with e-mails. But in my Outlook Contacts area these people only
have one entry. How can I make it not show but one, none for fax numbers and
only one, primary e-mail for the others? Thanks for any help or advice,

Is the same e-mail address showing up twice? How many email addresses
assigned to these contacts when you just look in Contacts? Double check.

Always a good idea to post your Outlook version, mode, SP level - find this
in help | about.

All normal--the Select Names list will show all sub entries for each contact.
They are not actually listed in the Contacts more than once. Outlook doesn't
know which bit of info you want. Try enabling and using Auto Complete instead
of the To button. That list is dynamic and keeps previously typed entries so
when you start typing, a list of addresses you typed before comes up. I find
that more helpful.

Thanks for the reply. My Outlook is 2002 SP3. It seems the most common
duplicates are from people who have an e-mail and a fax number in my contacts
list. Is shows both, on 2 separate rows (but I do not want the fax to show in
the e-mail pick list). However, some show two rows, each with an e-mail
address if the person had two e-mail address in contacts (one for "e-mail"
and one for "e-mail 2"). Can you advise further?

By the way, the reason I have duplicate postings is when I try to post a
question, at the last submit stage it always says it cannot submit (though I
am registered with a profile and signed in, etc.). But evidently it really
posted it anyway. Any suggestion on that too?

Then it sounds like they *do* have more than one email address defined in
their contact properties. Scroll over in the address book view to see what
is set ofr email 2. Check their contact properties - if they have more than
one, you're always going to see more than one. You don't need to use the
address book to send mail (using the TO button), you know - you can just
start typing the person's name and use Check Names (button on toolbar or
Ctrl+K) to let it look up the address in the address book.

For the fax numbers, see the link I posted before.

Sure - use a newsreader like Outlook Express or Forte Agent rather than the
web interface to the newsgroups - besides making this dupe post stuff a lot
less likely to happen, it's a lot easier to do nearly everything there,
including searching, which is always a good idea to do before you post, as
well as mark messages to be watched, and filter based on replies to your
posts.

I used to have the same problem but now, when adding a fax number to a
contact I simply write the word fax before the number and it no longer
appears in the list.

Sorry about the previous blank reply. It's my first post.
I'm having the same issue with the double entries, and it seems to be
related solely to having a fax number on record as well as a single e-mail
address. Outlook somehow overlooks the telephone number when assembling
entries to display, but doesn't overlook the fax number. Seems like Outlook
should not automatically show anything but e-mail addresses when prompted for
addresses using the "TO" button.

FAX numbers _are_ legitimate electronic addresses and can be used in Outlook
just like an email address when FAX software is installed. Thus, it is
correct for Outlook to show FAX numbers. Home or business phone numbers,
however, are not electronic addresses Outlook can use, so they're not shown.

I have the same problem but don't have fax numbers listed. Could the problem
be that every time you "sychronize" is when it duplicates?
