I have a new XP Pro system and several times so far I have found multiple
instances of all the local and mapped network drives in the tree view under
My Computer in Windows Explorer. Does anyone know the cause, or know if this
has been reported as a bug to MS?

I have the same problem only my case is a bit nastier. Everytime I shut down
and reboot my computer, when it reboots it chkdsk(s) the same drive twice
(under Explorer letters F and G) although it is only one physical drive?
This is a hard drive running on a Promise Ultra TX 133 SCSI controller.
What's your drive/controller configuration?
