Multiple authors

I have a website where multiple authors need to access it and make changes.
Is there a way to lock down files or folders so they cannot overwrite
certain files or folders.
If not what is the best way for all of these users to author to this website
without these files being in danger. These are files that need to be in the
root directory to work properly.

Use FP Document Check - Out/In and all only work in the online server in FP
(not on a local version)
- even that can have it's problems

IMHO
create subwebs for each author and leave 1 author responsible for the root web
