muliple operating systems

When i start my system, I have 2 copies of XP. The system gives me 30
secs. to choose which one i want to use. I'm sure the second copy is taking
up a lot of space and resources. How do i get rid of the OS I'm not using
without making a mess of everything? The only thing I'm really good at is
making a mess of things, so clear, simple advice would be apreciated.

First, you determine which one of the two you want to keep. Look in BOOT.INI
in the root of C:\> to help in making that determination.

Select the one you want and go to the desktop, open Explorer and find the
other installed version, highlight its folders and delete them Obviously you
better be sure you are deleting the folders and files of the version you do
not want.

Edit BOOT.INI to remove the listing of the one you deleted. (If you don't
want to see the BOOT.INI menu next time you start change the seconds to 0
and it won't appear.

Do you actually have two copies of XP installed or are there just two
entries on the startup menu because of some misadventure or other?

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the BOOT.INI tab then click on
the "Check all boot paths" button.

That will remove any "phantom" entries from the startup.

However if the second installation, or remnants of it, actually exists
then you will have to use the procedure suggested by Jerry,
