muffled sound

The sound coming from my PC speakers has recently changed from clear to very
muffled. I have to turn my speaker volume as high as it goes for me to bearly
hear it. I have bought new speakers as I thought I had blown them, but the
sound is the same. Is it a sound card issue? Can I make any checks? How do I
get my sound back? My computer is a Multivision & I have Windows XP.

Try a system restore, you can go back up to 90 days.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Thanks
I haven't tried this yet. I have only just (5mins ago) installed a new all
in one printer - will this be affected if I system restore??

Tried reinstalling drivers for soundcard but ii386 directory isn't in
C:\Windows
Any other ideas?? Is there a way round this without having to uninstall &
reinstall my new printer??

Yes I do. Found the file - what do I do now?

Leave the installed printer alone for right now. Concentrate on your sound
system.
Go to: Start>Search>Files and Folders and type i386 and click search.
You should find several copies of this directory on your harddrive.
Use the one with the Service Pack files if you have SP2 installed.
You do have SP2 installed, do you not?
Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD (it is FREE)

Reinstall the soundcard. The i386 directory is where the soundcard
drivers are probably stored.
