MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)

Ron P

I am being constantly hounded by Windows update to download and install
"MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)" which I have done 4 times.
Installation indicated as successful.

How do I stop this nonsense?

I have read the KB927978 article but there are parts of it I don't
understand.

Under the known Issues with this security update, I know how to remove the
security update, as indicated in point #1.

For item #2, I think that %systemRoot%\System32 is referring to the
Windows\system32\ folder....correct?? I can find the MSXML4.dll file and I
can delete it.

Item #3 is what I really don't understand. It says "repair the previous
installation of MSXML 4.0 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in
Control Panel." How does one do this when there isn't any reference to it in
the Add or Remove Programs?

Thank you

Is there an error report?

Have you looked at the detail in the WindowsUpdate.log located in your
Windows folder?

Hope this helps.

There isn't any error report generated.

The windowsUpdate.log is there but it is totally outside my ability to
understand it. There are literally hundreds of lines of meaningless (to me)
information.

This seems to have started after going to IE7 and then changing my mind and
reverting back to IE6 at least according to the dates in the log file.

In addition to this, I am being continually hounded to install IE7 which I
really don't want to do....hate it intensely.

I got to be so annoyed with the Windows Update bugging me to install IE7 and
this MSXML thing that I have turned it off.

There is a whole series of these MSXML files in my System32 folder.

They are:
msxmlr.dll
msxml.dll
msxml2.dll
msxml2r.dll
msxml3(3).dll
msxml3a.dll
msxml3r.dll
msxml4.dll
msxml4r.dll

Any help to resolve this continual request to update would be much
appreciated.

Reinstall MSXML 4.00 sp2

Snipped very gently--------------------------------------------

Thank you very much. It worked like a charm.

How did you find those downloads and how did you know what it was that was
needed to be downloaded?

Thank you

Ron

MS offers free email support for critical updates.

If you get a failed critical update - just a failure msg with no help - run
a manual update then history, locate the failure click the '?' this will
lead you to a number of options.

An MSN Search found that for me earlier today. However, it seemed nearly
as difficult to take in as the KB Article. Seems it is not given the
result in this thread.

Don't turn of Windows Update.
You can quite easily tell Windows Update to quit bugging you with these
messages (at least I found it rather easily).
Select the option to list all update (not just the critical ones).
Then, in the description of each update is a box which you check to disable
notification of the update.

The trouble is, some of those updates you might actually want and disabling
them now, could conceivably cause problems in the future that depend upon
those very disabled updates.

It has me scratching my head when an Internet Browser update is considered a
"critical update"....it is just a browser after all.
