msvcr71.dll problem

I am posting this from my work computer as I cannot access the internet
through IE 7 at home. Recently after installing an iTunes update, I began
experiencing a problem with IE 7. When I tried to open IE 7 I got an message
that said that Internet Explorer was having a problem and needed to close,
sorry of the inconvenience etc. Since that time everytime I try to open IE I
get the same message. I pulled up the Advanced System Information Error Log
and say that one entry indicated as follows: Source: Application Error
Description: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16762,
faulting module msvcr71.dll, version 7.10.3052.4, fault address 0x00010428.
Following this is an entry labeled McLogEvent Description: MCSCAN32 Engine
Initialisation failed. Engine returned error: 3

I think this is related to my inability to open Internet Explorer to access
the internet. In addition I get a crashed message when I attempted to open
Foxfire as an alternative. The odd thing is that I can still access and
download my e-mail messages from the web and am still getting updates for my
virus protection software (McAfee) as well which would indicate to me that my
DSL connection is still functioning. I did attempt to reinstall IE 7 but
this did not solve the problem. Does anyone have any idea if the above Error
Log entries are related to this problem as I suspect and is there a fix
outside of reinstalling my operating system. I have all my files backed up
on an external hard drive and have system reinstallation discs from Dell and
of course all my added software disc, but I would like to avoid this work if
possible. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks!

Kelly, thanks for your reply, but I guess I should have mentioned that I am
running XP Home Edition, so I am not sure that the links you posted will work
for my problem. I am not an accomplished computer geek and probably have
just enough knowledge to be dangerous. Could you elaborate on what you have
posted so that I can understand better or is what you have posted only
effective for the Media Center Edition?

Hey Joe;

I have tried to reinstall IE 7 and also doing a restore, but neither of
those resolved the problem. Any other suggestions?

I no longer use iTunes due to problems with it also. It use to crash my
laptop and then I could not boot for a driver of thiers was attempting to
boot the iPod which of course it could not and I had to restore image
backups a few times until I figured this out. Now the laptop no longer
crashes since not installing iTunes... I would suggest you do the same. If I
need iTunes I only install it in a Virtual PC so that i don't care about the
crash...

Now all is well...
