MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger

G

Gina Mcleod

I somehow have both messengers on my computer. They seem
to both be the same thing. All the same contacts and
everything. But when I turn my computer on, one will log
in automatically, and then it pops up a screen to say
I've been logged out of the other because I've logged in
somewhere else. I would prefer to use MSN Instant
Messenger and not the Windows Instant Messenger.
Although, I cannot delete one or the other. It says
another program is using this like Outlook Express (even
when its not open). How do I get rid of one or the other
so I don't have to log off one to use the other.
Thanks,
Gina

Greetings Gina,

It sounds like you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed. Norton added a new "instant
messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and
cause it to automatically run and refuse to close. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus
(Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the
clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck
MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Next to stop Windows Messenger from loading with Windows, open up the main Windows Messenger
window (click Start, then All Programs, then Windows Messenger if you can't find it), click
the Tools menu, then click Options, then the Preferences tab, uncheck 'Run this program when
Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (the exact wording depends on
your version) and click OK.
