So I upgrade to version 6, and got fed up with constant "You have been
logged out 'cos you logged in elsewhere" messages. Noticed that 4.7 and 6
were both installed, and assumed they were logging each other out all the
time.

Uninstalled 6, went into Windows set-up an deselected MSN Messenger to
remove 4.7 too (in an effort to get back to a clean sheet).

4.7 still runs (despite the fact it's not installed! It's unchecked in
Windows set-up). How do I get rid of it?

Wanna put 6 back on, but not till I've nuked 4.7.

Thanks,

Fred.

Thanks Rick. In the end I just reinstalled 6 and it seems to have reused the
Sound settings, so it's OK. Before I had Sounds settings for MSN Messenger &
Windows Messenger. Now just for MSN Messenger.

Looks like it might finally all be OK.

Can't help feeling that MS have goofed with this upgarde of Messenger tho.
It's not a very clean upgrade!

Fred.

Removing it doesn't get rid of it - believe me.

Start | Run | "RunDLL32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" (without the quotes)
should uninstall Messenger entirely.

There are two different programs (from different groups in Microsoft) ,
that get confused. Windows Messenger is the one that comes with XP and
is integrated, so it is used (for example) in OE Contacts. It comes as
version 4.7 - there is an upgrade at
www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger
to its version 5.0

MSN Messenger is similar but different and has MSN extras, which you may
or may not like. It has just gone from *its* version 5 to version 6.
Unfortunately when you get a message from Windows Messenger that there
is an update available the page it takes you to is the one for MSN with
a large Download button to download that - not the Windows one

You probably had the two versions running simultaneously, on the same
account and server, hence they were quarrelling over which was logged in

They would be in different folders of Program files - Messenger and (I
think) MSNMessenger respectively. You appear to have got rid of the MSN
one, so I would go to the link above to get the new Windows one
