Greetings Kasper,
Are you using the latest version of MSN Messenger (6.2)? MSN Messenger 6.x provides a new
protocol for file transfer which allows it to get around most networking problems and
directly send files through the Messenger server (assuming you're not sending anything too
big, it works quite well). If you are using MSN Messenger 6.x already, your contacts will
also need to be using 6.x in order to make use of this however.
File transfer in previous versions of Messenger (and in Windows Messenger) support different
functionality depending on the version (for instance, some support Universal Plug and
Play/UPnP whereas some don't). As such, I'm not going to write a massive novel explaining it
here, but a number of things, including the Windows XP firewall can be responsible for file
transfer difficulties.
