MSN 6.1 audio direct or through server?

Paul Westwell

Hi,

MSN 6.1 was working fine but now the audio is failing to connect with a
number of people it previously worked with, Video, file transfer, games all
work fine.

I have a home network with linksys BEFSR41, the exact same problem is
occurring from two separate XP machines both running McAfee and both machine
configured for UPnP.

I have not changed anything in the router except forwarded a couple of extra
ports, one udp and one tcp.

Audio between machines on my home network if fine

When you initiate and audio connection with MSN does it connect via a server
etc or direct?

I'd like to think the problem is external but I'm not too sure.

Paul

Greetings Paul,

It can only be established directly -- it does not go through the server.

Since it was working before, and you have UPnP on, it may be that you just need to "clean
out" the UPnP port forwardings or your contact has something wrong on their end.

To clean them out, click Start, All Programs,Accessories, Communications, Network
Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway
heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr'
entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger
icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

disconnect but no change.

I can hear my voice on my speakers but unable to make

Jonathan,

Ok I have just done what you suggested but not had the opportunity to try it
yet!

I had around 10 entries relating to msnmgr etc and now have just two, one
for udp and one for tcp.

Where would all the others come from?

I'll let you know how I get on, need a remote friend to come online now....

Regards,

Paul

Your sound system is misconfigured. You should not hear your own voice.
Click the little sound Icon in your system tray and select
Options/Properties and make sure the Microphone is NOT checked in the
PLAYBACK mode, but IS selected in the RECORDING Mode.
