Hi, sometimes my computer runs realllly slow, and when I ctrl alt del and
look at the applications running, MSMSGS.EXE is hogging the CPU to the extent
of 99 or even 100% why is this, and how can I stop it ?

It may be a password stealing Trojan, an Internet worm or a Downloader Trojan.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt428.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

msmsgs.exe is the windows messenger service
I believe it is used for .Net, remote assistance etc.
I am not sure if you can completely stop it from running
because It may startup if you run Msn messenger, or even outlook express, IE
and the MSN browser.

Wesley:

It is also the name of the file used by the following infectors ...

| msmsgs.exe is Windows Messenger, Messenger Client or MSN Messenger Service
| depending on what version you have.

Just to be clear, "msmsgs.exe" only pertains to Windows Messenger, not MSN
Messenger. MSN Messenger is "msnmsgr.exe".

Now I cuaght it, and I hope you realize that the 3.0.0.286 version is 1 year
and almost 3 months before XP. When XP came out, the version changed to
4.0.xx to 4.7.xxx

3.0.0.286 is for:
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 672016 8/7/2000 mmssetup.cab
\RK\eBook\IESETUP

Go back to your second link, and read the "more info" links regarding the
versions.

I am not disputing your advice, nor wanting to argue, just pointing out the
discrepancy; so, do you see the differences now?

And if the OP has WinXP SP2 it "is" disabled by default.

No, Windows Messenger isn't disabled by default, but Messenger Service is;
two separate animals.

No. It is the Windows Messenger instant messenger. Please do not
confuse the two

I did not confuse to two.
I guess I should not have used the word "Service" However I was referring to
windows messenger (msmsgs)
not Messenger (svchost.exe -k netsvcs)
