msmpeng.exe

hogging up a lot of cpu suddenly. and freezing programs that are trying to
start up.
only solution ive come up with is turning off defenders active protection
while starting up other programs and then enabling active protection once
programs are open.

MSMPENG consuming excessive CPU is often caused by conflicting real
time security software trying to access the same file(s) repeatedly
and concurrently, in effect causing a deadlock condition. I see by
your later post that you are running multiple security programs. I'd
recommend sticking to Defender and Avira. Loading the other protection
is overkill and actualy prevents your primary security software from
doing a proper job.

Good!

i manually start webroot spysweeper for msn,

Why? Remove it it'll cause trouble.
and spyware blaster

Elaborate on your manual starting procedure for SpywareBlaster, please.
(Do you realize that SpywareBlaster is not a scanning application?)
and zone alarm.

The root of multiple problems! Remove it and reactivate the build-in
firewall application.

thanx everyone.

conflict must be with avira since other programs are only used to scan.
i will disable avira active protection and see if thats the cause.

i usually update defender through automatic update process.
will try downloading to desktop next time.

spyware sweeper has never caused me trouble and ive had it for years.
-same with zone alarm.
seems im having a problem with a windows defender function. lol.

spyware blaster is started manually before going online as well as zone alarm.

thanx again for all your help.

You need to have an antivirus application providing real-time protection in
addition to Windows Defender. Windows Defender is an antispyware
application--and viruses are a much more serious issue.

Feel free to experiment, and let us know how it comes out, but I'd come down
on the side of having the antivirus active over the antispyware any day.

Zone Alarm, depending on what you are using, can be just the free
firewall and not be conflicting, or you might be using the full suite,
which includes spyware and virus protection, in which case you should
disable Defender and also not be running Avira as it is also
anti-malware/anti-virus/antispyware.
Running multiple antivirus programs can cause serous issues - and not
with Defender, though it can contribute to the issues.
Spyware Blaster does not *run*. Spyware Blaster simply checks for
updates and then it sets your browser security settings and populates
the Hosts file to stop redirection to known "bad" hosts. Then it
exits.

I hate to tell you that, but based on your posts you are definitely
ignorant with respect to the modus operandi of the programs installed to
your operating system. Please consult Avira's, WinDef's websites and
educate yourself! With respect to PFW's, I also suggest reading and
comprehending material published by experts who know the innards of your
operating system. And beware, take commercially sponsored publications,
websites etc. with a ton of salt!

well i turned off the avira active protection and left defender enabled while
starting my work programs and wmiprvse.exe maxed out at 100% cpu. lol.

disabling defender active protection and starting up my work programs seems
to work without any spikes or freeze ups.

and yes i have the free version of zone alarm. i tried the pro version some
time ago but found it full of gliches.

again thank you everyone for your awesome help.
