Download & install MS Virtual Machine Build 3805.
Then visit the Windows Update website to obtain the
security updated version (Build 3810).

.
Why is sun java so slow? It seems like it has a hard time
finding correct paths. Not a good option compared to msvm.

Probably a question best addressed to them (Sun Microsystems) as it is their
code.

MS produced a Java that extends the language as defined by Sun, so that
it would 'work better' with Windows. This was not included in windows
XP, but was available as a separate download, and included in XP SP1

(There appear to be sites that have taken advantage of this, and will
not work with the Sun one).

Sun sued MSoft, and the ruling in the case prohibits MS from making
'their' engine available as a download - so it is left out of the
revised SP1a

You can still get a 3805 or 3809 build from some sites that are *not*
MSoft sites - and MSoft is not going to object.
eg 3805 from Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/msjavx86.exe

Once you have such an older version you can get the 816093 'critical
security update' which is effectively a complete build, 3810

Would you consider this to be the best option, or would it be better to go
to Sun's site and get their version of the JVM?

Or both. Because the MS version has some extensions (which are at the
root of the lawsuit) there are some sites that will only work with it;
there may be others that only work properly with Sun. The Sun
installation gives you an item in Control Panel - its Browser page
allows you whether to have it (or by implication the MS one) as the
default for IE or for Netscape. So I have IE set up to use the MS one,
and Netscape (or more often Opera) to use Sun if I run into a site that
needs it
