To initiate an application repair from the Add/Remove Programs control panel,
try the following:

1) start->run, type "appwiz.cpl"
2) select Microsoft Office in the list of installed programs
3) click on the "Click here for support information." link
4) In the support info dialog box, click on the repair button

Note that instantiating an application repair will require access to the
original installation source media (which could be access to a network share or
the Office CD).

As for the actual error message in the application event log, you should look
for both 1001 and 1004 MsiInstaller event log warnings. The 1004 message should
indicate that actual resource that failed detection (of known).
