Unless I misunderstand you, it would seem that the Windows Association for
..MSI files has been broken on your system. You can make adjustments to file
associations in Windows Explorer. Try this...

Open Windows Explorer.

Click Tools>>Folder Options...

This will open the Folder Options dialog. Click the tab that reads "File
Types." You should see every type of file association. In my system, MSI
files are associted with the Windows Installer. You should be able to click
the MSI file type from the file types listed, and choose 'change,' to
associate MSI file with any program you like.

I hope this helps.

See if this helps.

Go to this web site and scroll down to MSI File Association
Fix. Download the zip file and extract the contents. Run the
registry fix.
