Not sure if I can explain this easily though it's a simplem problem - hope
the answer is too!

I have three pcs - 2 desktops with XPHome SP2 and a laptop with 98SE. They
are setup on a Microsoft Windows Network named MSHOME. They share internet
connection via one of the pcs using wireless connection. All three pcs can
access the internet ok. I can access each pc from the other two. The only
"niggle" is that, *sometimes* one of the pcs doesn't show in the MSHOME
folder - it doesn't even show in its own MSHOME folder . Even when that's
so, all the shared folders on that machine are still accessible through My
Network Places.

It's not a major problem just annoying that I can't figure out why it
happens.

sounds like master browser issue. quoted from http://ChicagoTech.net
How do I know I have a browser problem

When you open My Network Places, the computer list you see is obtaining from
the master browser of your network. You have a master browser issue if you
have the following symptoms. 1) If you can ping a computer name, you can
search it, you can map it, but that computer doesn't show or take long time
to show up on My Network Places.
2) Net view command shows no lists or shows "System error 6118 has occurred.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available".
3) when clicking on Computers Near Me in My Network Places or workgroup name
in Entire Network, the following error message may appear: "Cannot Access
'Computers Near Me' " or "Workgroup is not accessible" errors.
4) when click workgroup name under Entire Network Places, you get "Workgroup
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permission. The list server for this workgroup is not currently
available."
5) Windows Explorer or My Network Places take a long time to open.
6) Event logs on servers show many master browser election messages.

I agree - having had a read, it does seem to describe my problem. I tried a
couple of the DOS commands to view info but can't really say I understood
what it told me. However, something that I did jogged the pc back into life
and the missing machine now shows in the folder. I'm still though left with
the original issue which is I dont know why - and presumably therefore
havent stopped it happening again.

The sites you referred to are rather technical for me but thanks anyway.
