Network difficulties

M

Munkeyjunkey

I have a wired network (D-Link DI-604) with 2 PCs and a laptop. All
running Avast Anti-Virus and Windows Firewall. All are Windows XP SP2
and all are connected to MSHOME and all can access the internet and all
can access the router. The 2 PCs can connect to each other and browse
each other's files but the laptop does not notice either and cannot
connect to either of them. When I click "view workgroup computers" on
laptop I get a message that reads "Mshome is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource...The list of servers
for this workgroup is not available". When I click on the share of one
of my PCs on my laptop I get this message: \\computername\c is not
accessible. you might not have access to this network resource...the
network path was not found. I don't have any special firewalls running
either (BTW any good firewalls that will not impede networks?). Please
help me, I've been struggling with this problem for a while.
Thanks

The error "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource...The list of servers for this workgroup is not available" is
an SMB problem. You have either an SMB transport missing, or a personal firewall
problem.

Did you look for several other possible problems, any of which might be the
cause of your problem? Read this article with an open mind.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

You could look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

I ran browstat status on my laptop and my PC and my PC comes up with
Browsing is NOT active on domain. Master name cannot be determined
from GetAdapterStatus. But both are connected to MSHOME, how do I fix
this?

One thing that I noticed is that the 2 PCs that can connect together
are both running XP Pro while the laptop which can't connect to either
(but can still use the internet) is using XP Home. Any ideas on how
this can be fixed now?
Thanks

The error "Browsing is NOT active on domain" is caused by SMBs not getting where
they are needed.

You have either a NetBT setting problem, or a personal firewall problem.

You can look at the diagnostics I mentioned, which should point you in the
direction of the problem. Or read the above articles again, and ask questions.

I don't understand how to get the SMB's to where they are needed, how
would I do that?

I enabled NetBT on my laptop yesterday but haven't touched my PCs,
since I have a small home network with a d-link DI-604 router, which
setting should I have for NetBT on all my computers?

I removed my Zone Alarm in an attempt to solve the problem so this
isn't my problem.

Right now I am still stuck on Basic Diagnosis because of the
aforementioned problem.

Would have different versions of XP make a difference (especially
depending on which settings I should use) when networking them?

Thanks

All versions of Windows XP talk the same protocols. SMBs, and their transports,
are common to all versions of Windows. There is one exception here - the SMB
transport directly hosted over IP which Windows 2000 and XP support.

You need to start with NetBT explicitly Enabled on all computers. Once that is
done, if you don't have an improvement in Browstat, then you have personal
firewalls blocking the SMBs. Whether or not you "removed" Zone Alarm (and did
you follow the detailed removal instructions from Zone Labs?

Now you've run browstat on 2 computers, but not posted the results, so I have to
guess. You say the PC shows "Browsing is NOT active on domain". Does the other
computer (which you don't name) show that the browser shows that it's running
there? What else does it show? Try posting the complete suite of diagnostics,
for each computer, so we can see.

I don't think that's the only problem, but that is the most obvious. Is NetBT

Thanks, that solved it, and as I said above, I have NetBT enabled on
all my computers. Do you think I would be able to re-install ZoneAlarm
without any difficulties network-wise now?
Thanks
Munkeyjunkey

If the Node Type correction fixed things, you should be able to re install ZA as
long as you configure it properly. Do it one computer at a time, and test after
each installation.
