msgsrv32 (not responding)

Since recently upgrading my system to a P4 processor,
Intel 845 motherboard, 256 RAM, and simultaneously
changing my OS to Win98SE, I installed my trusty Outlook
2002 and am constantly getting crashes. When I force-quit
the program using CTRL-ALT-DEL, I see "Msgsrv32 (not
responding)" every time. Can anyone explain what I should
do to remedy this problem? I also use an iPAQ that synchs
w/ Outlook, and its ActiveSync program often crashes
together with Outlook, but I think the problem is in
Outlook.

I believe you'll find that this is a win98 problem. A google search will
show many causes for this, generally overcome by ensuring you have the
latest drivers for yr peripherals. Are you still using 'old' cards? I believe
that if you upgraded the 'engine room' and left the rest as is you may have
all sorts of legacy issues.
I must confess I find it a little strange that you upgraded the cpu etc to
such an extent, but chose win98 as yr os.

I live in Pakistan, and people here swear by Win98, saying
it is the only stable Windows OS. I took his word for
it. I had been using Me but with some problems. Which
peripherals could be causing this Outlook/Win98 clash? I
have an HP v40 printer hooked up, but that's about it -
other than the Pocket PC I mentioned. But the "msgserv32
not responding" / crash problem occurs whether or not
these peripherals are hooked up.

But what about yr video and sound cards etc. I meant by peripherals the
internal ones.
Personally I did'nt find win stable until Win2000Pro
I have a particularly busy Win2K system that runs 24/7 and probs are a
rarity.
Have you run Windows Update and Office Update?

I tried what you suggested, running the updaters for
Windows & Office. I looked over the Windows updates
available for my computer and they were either Security-
related, language-related, or not relevant. Then I tried
the Office updater. First I would have to install the
Office XP Service Pack 1 (before SP 2 and Outlook
updater). After I downloaded SP1 and ran the installer, I
hit a glitch: the file c:\config.msi\PT6235.TMP and then
62B0.TMP had already been modified by other means (I don't
know how, maybe on the original CD) and the patch could
not be applied, so the installer had to quit and I
couldn't even install the first SP. Any suggestions?

By the way, is there any way I can find this thread
without having to page thru the newsgroup and hunt for it?

Click in the 'spectacles' colum, next to the msg. A spectacle icon will then
appear, showing the thread as being 'watched'
Then click 'spectacles' to sort

I terminated screen saver, deleted all TMP files from TEMP
folder. I tried CTRL-ALT-DELETE to select & quit various
programs running in the background but kept crashing the
system, so I quit that idea. When I tried to install SP1

Sorry, i hit 'send' by accident...

When I tried to install SP1 again, the same error came up,
finding a different TMP file in the folder C:\config.msi
which had 'already been modified' and would not accept the
patch. I tried browsing to that hidden folder & deleting
all TMP files, but this didn't help; I got the same error.

As far as Windows security updates, I am hesitant to
install them b/c all together they add up to a lot of MBs
(large) and I have only a dial-up connection, it would
take forever & a day to run the updater. I read the
description of what each one does and none of them seem to
pertain to my problem. If you could tell me
exactly 'which' security update might help the msgsrv32
crash problem, or a few guesses, then I could select &
install those ones...?
