MSGINA.dll: Failed to find after update

running xp pro on a laptop: Getting the 'logon interface'
failure because msgina.dll could not be found, forced to
restart only to get the same thing. And this occured
directly after getting a windows update. Using 'Last
Known Good Configuration' does not work, getting the same
error. Everything was fine until this. This is a
business laptop, and I'm having the win xp pro disk sent
to me from another state so that I can run recovery
console and replace the msgina.dll file. until then, i'm
dead in the water.

was hoping there might be some other way to fix this, a
work-around, since i'm just twiddling my thumbs until the
disk arrives, and seeing as how it's a windows-update-
induced problem. cannot start in any mode, safe or
otherwise. everything comes to "Msgina.dll failed to
load" and have to restart from there.

any suggestions will be welcome. thank you.

thank you for responding.

google was my first resort. i have tried the methods
suggested by microsoft, but they assume that last known
good configuration is going to work and it doesn't. other
results are from other ppl having the same issue, and ppl
replying by pointing them to the microsoft pages which,
i've already determined, are not helpful. other people
who solve this problem also first assume that LKGC will
work.

was looking for ppl who've experienced the same and have
fixed it through a method not already espoused by
microsoft.
