.msft - does anyone know what this is??

A friend is trying to e-mail two files to me; one is a text doc and the other
has a .icm extension. Every time he sends it, the .icm file shows in my
mailbox with the filename .msft with a little square box at the end. Of
course I can't open or save it because of an incorrect syntax. He has cc:ed
himself and verified that the file is not being corrupted on his end -
something is happening to it when it hits my end.

Can anyone help me figure out what is causing this and how I can fix it? The
only reference I can find to .msft is in the body of a DDF file, and that
just isn't making sense to me. Don't know where else to go, but figured since
the extension "appears" to be a variation of "microsoft" it made the most
sense to start here.

MSFT is the stock symbol for Microsoft stock. MICROSOFT CP (NasdaqNM:MSFT)


Probably an embedded ad.

Ron, I am using Outlook to access my e-mail account with Cox.

Jone Doe, the .icm file is a color management profile, and my friend is not
embedding a microsoft ad, so not sure how an ad could be embedded after it's
sent to me, and the same thing has happened in four attempts to the one file,
but not the .txt file. When he copies himself on the e-mail, he receives it
with the proper filename and extension.

Carey thank you for the link, but that is the first place I checked and it
is not a valid extension.

Ask him to rename the file with a different extension before sending it.
Once you get it rename it back to the original. No idea what is causing the
problem but this might be a work around for you.

As someone else mentioned msft is the stock symbol for Microsoft. It is also
used in many examples in Microsoft texts, e.g.. programming examples, domain
names, etc. I'm guessing somewhere a bit of example code got pasted into
some production code. It may not even be in a Microsoft program. An
antivirus program or something that scans the email either on your computer
or your ISP's mail server might also be the cause.

Do you have any antivirus or anti popup software that may be scanning your
email before outlook express gets it... the Zone Alarm firewall used to do
this too.

If so turn of the email scanning option if you know how to do that and see
if that makes a difference.

Does your ISP provide any form of anti virus or anti spam filtering?

Can your friend tell you what the file is "Supposed" to be, is it supposed
to be an ICM file and if so does it go with some specific software he/she
has?

What if he/she renames it to file.icm.txt and then sends it. When you get it
you can save it and rename it. Even if that doesn't work just change the ICM
to TXT and try it so it goes from file.icm to file.txt

Any of these might work, if it's just a one-off problem caused by something
in between you it's maybe not worth diagnosing?
