msdos floppy boot with C: drive access ?

N

Newsgroup_user

I have been searching the net for 2 hours and tried 2 different ways
(bootdisk.com and XP format /s) to create a bootable floppy msdos but
on both attempts, the C: drive is not existing.

I want to create a bootable floppy msdos to be able to flash my bios
beause the needed files are on my C: drive (they are not making flash
from floppy anymore).

I prefer not accessing images from non microsoft sites (even if I did
go to bootdisk.com) because I had bad virus experiences in the past
because of such attempts.

How can I make a bootable floppy msdos myself and be able to access
both cdrom and all my HD ?

Please research the subject of NTFS, FAT (FAT16, FAT32, etc) and MS/PC-DOS.

You will find that MS/PC-DOS is INCAPABLE of directly accessing any drive using NTFS.

You need to acquire multiple things, a DOS NTFS file system driver, DOS
CD-Rom drivers, and knowledge on how to load these by creating custom
config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Use Google to find the files and info on
how to configure your floppy.

Why don't you just put the BIOS update image on your boot floppy?

That is because your C: drive is formated NTFS and DOS cannot read NTFS
so it thinks that the drive is non existent. You will have to copy the
files to another diskette or burn them to a CD.

Flash by floppy was great. However, a lot of motherboard makers now
make Windows Bios flash tools. I have successfully used a few.

Also, you might be able to set up a flash drive for this flash
process.

Many use an even better method, a flash utility built into the BIOS
firmware, I never use Windows based flash utilities if I can help it.

You CAN easily format a floppy to create a bootable disk in Windows
XP. Follow these steps:

1) Insert a floppy in your floppy drive;
2) Launch Windows Explorer and go to My Computer
3) Right-Click on on your floppy drive,
4) Select format and also check create systems disk.
5) After about 2 minutes, you are done.

The DOS you get is that one you got from WinME but it does everything
you want to do including creating a GHOST bootable floppy. Some of us
still have old Ghost that works from bootable floppy and saves on CD-RW etc.

Hope this helps.

Won't work: The System Disk will be a DOS windows system disk on FAT
tables.
DOS OS can NOT read XP's NTFS file formats. It can only see FAT
drives. But with the right programs, it could be made to see the NTFS
disks, as mentioned elsewhere.

I think Twaynie better stick with learning more about the registry, and just
leave it at that. ROFL.

What is your motherboard, BIOS manufacturer information?

Many, many, many manufactures have ways to download just the stuff you
need to make a bootable floppy or CD. This is not a new issues for
them.

Forget about trying to create something that needs to access your HDD
- there must an easier way.

The BIOS people have already figured all this out and we can help you
find it if you give some more details.

Are you having a particular issue that you know will be resolved by
flashing your BIOS, do you just think you need to flash your BIOS or
did somebody tell you it will fix some problem (what is the
problem).

If you think your BIOS or motherboard CMOS is screwed up, maybe just
clearing it will fix you up. Much safer and easier than flashing.
This generally take just a few seconds, nothing to download, safer,
etc., etc. I would try that first.

Can't help with out more details - you will just get guesses, might
be, maybe and try this kinds of ideas.

Of course I know the system disk will be a dos FAT tables. For what the
OP wants to do it is all he needs. Why don't you read his original post
before confirming your stupidity. I use these disks all the time when
people wants to upgrade their bios! this is the only way to upgrade any
bios currently available in the market. If you are used to DELL systems
then it too uses these disks except that they actually give you DOS in
the exe files you are required to download.

Ignore that idiot called Twaine. He knows nothing about BIOS. To
upgrade BIOS you DON'T need access to HDD period.

Bios info is all hardware embedded for obvious reasons. It has nothing
to do with HDD and you don't need any programs in Windows to read BIOS.

You can't do this with MS-DOS floppies as MS-DOS doesn't understand NTFS
filesystems. And the 3rd party read/write drivers for NTFS will over-fill
a floppy once you get the other material you need together.

Put the flash files on CD, and use a Win9x boot diskette with CD drivers.
You won't be able to see the hard disk, but you will be able to see the CD.

Or, just use a bootable CD.

Nevermind guys, I successfully flashed my BIOS.

So you can stop replying back.
