msconfig

Hi I have a problem with msconfig.exe. When I try running it it
doesn't
work. if I go to run and type in msconfig, nothing seems to happen,
but if I
go see in task manager it is running and taking up all the resources.
After reading through the newsgroups I noticed it could be a virus, so
I ran
my avg complete scan, and trendmicro online scan and both showed no
virus. Also ran them in safe mode. I ran adaware and pestpatrol with
latest updates and nothing major came out of there.
I also noticed that people who have a virus which can effect msconfig
also
effects regedit, but my regedit works perfectly and so does task
manager.
I also tried running sfc /scannow and norton win doctor.
I also downloaded and installed xp_emergencyutility and ran msconfig
from
c:/xp-emergencyutility and same thing happens.
I am at a loss right now, can anyone help?
thanks in advance
Forgot to mention this is on winxp sp1 all update installed
system restore is off
BTW does the same thing in safe mode.
Everything else on computer seems to run fine.

Try this forum ->>>>>http://forums.techguy.org/f21-s.html
do a search under misconfig.exe and look for the different
articles that describe the same issue you are having -
there should be only one instance of it on your system -
if more than one you have been infected with something - I
had the same problem a long time ago and cannot remember
the particulars right now - you can always join the forum
and then post a request for help.

Luck to ya.

Hi Sal,

Suggestions and checkpoints:

This issue has been traced to an improperly formatted BOOT.INI file. This
is a hidden file, usually in the root directory of the C: drive.

This file can be opened in Notepad. A typical BOOT.INI file looks like
this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

To extract a new copy:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the
following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_ Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.

Here is my boot.ini file
[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

everything seems ok. I also tried a different boot.ini version I had
and no luck.
I tried already extracting the msconfig file, I also tried deleting
all instances of msconfig on my system and extracting a new copy. I
tried deleting everything again extract and rename the file. I also
downloaded the newest msconfig.exe file for xp sp1. Everything else on
my computer seems to work great...weird...

Hi Sal,

I have seen this behavior with non-admin users and with those not having SP1
installed. But this doesn't seem to be the case here.

I know you stated that you have run some cleaners, etc but follow the steps
listed here to rule out Trojan.Ahero.

First of all Kelly let me say one thing. thank-you. Seldom when
posting that people actually read the previous posts before replying.
I hate getting a reply to my problem to do something that I already
said I did.
I see you actually take the time to read.
Back to my problem. Thanks for the suggestion but it didn't help.
I just installed SP2 today hoping that would help, but nada.
One more bit of info I can maybe say to help resolve the problem, is
that when I run msconfig and shows up in the task manager eating up
all resouces, but also the me usage keeps on growing and growing. I
left it there for about 5 minutes. It started out at 44,000k now is at
54,304k and growing.
Also if I do a file search there is another msconfig.exe from win98 on
my c drive. If I click on it, it gives me a few error messages about
kernel32.dll config.sys, autoexec, system.ini, win.ini etc which is
normal as it is associated with win98 but it actually opens up and
shows me the win98 version of msconfig. So this probably prooves that
it isn't some virus or trojan since the file name is not the problem.
Though all other xp versions of msconfig I tried don't work...
This is driving me nuts.

Most welcome, Sal.

And ah....yes, I do remember this being an issue before within dual boot
systems. The boot.ini did play a part (with the same partition being listed
twice for two different operating systems), causing the same config.sys,
autoexec, system.ini, win.ini messages and also, for each case Win98 was
installed on C, XP on D within the same drive.

The workaround was to navigate to your I386 folder to MSCONFIG.EX_ then
expand it.

That said, I had already suggested your doing so. Good luck and keep us
posted.)

Also,
If I expand msconfig.ex_ to a filename other than msconfig.exe, such as

if the filename is msconfig.exe, or msconfig.ex_

Thanks

Hi Sal,

I have seen this behavior with non-admin users and with those not
having
SP1
installed. But this doesn't seem to be the case here.

I know you stated that you have run some cleaners, etc but follow the
steps
listed here to rule out Trojan.Ahero.

Here is my boot.ini file
[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

everything seems ok. I also tried a different boot.ini version I
had
and no luck.
I tried already extracting the msconfig file, I also tried deleting
all instances of msconfig on my system and extracting a new copy. I
tried deleting everything again extract and rename the file. I also
downloaded the newest msconfig.exe file for xp sp1. Everything else
on
my computer seems to work great...weird...

Hi Sal,

Suggestions and checkpoints:

This issue has been traced to an improperly formatted BOOT.INI
file.
This
is a hidden file, usually in the root directory of the C: drive.

This file can be opened in Notepad. A typical BOOT.INI file looks
like
this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

To extract a new copy:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter
the
following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_
Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.

Hi I have a problem with msconfig.exe. When I try running it it
doesn't
work. if I go to run and type in msconfig, nothing seems to
happen,
but if I
go see in task manager it is running and taking up all the
resources.
After reading through the newsgroups I noticed it could be a
virus,
so
I ran
my avg complete scan, and trendmicro online scan and both showed
no
virus. Also ran them in safe mode. I ran adaware and pestpatrol
with
latest updates and nothing major came out of there.
I also noticed that people who have a virus which can effect
msconfig
also
effects regedit, but my regedit works perfectly and so does task
manager.
I also tried running sfc /scannow and norton win doctor.
I also downloaded and installed xp_emergencyutility and ran
msconfig
from
c:/xp-emergencyutility and same thing happens.
I am at a loss right now, can anyone help?
thanks in advance
Forgot to mention this is on winxp sp1 all update installed
system restore is off
BTW does the same thing in safe mode.
Everything else on computer seems to run fine.
