msconfig

Can anyone help. I am trying to stop programmes loading at startup by
unticking the boxes on the startup section of msconfig which I have done many
times without any problem. Now when I try to do this it tells me I need to
log on as an administrator which I am logged on as, I have scanned for
viruses and dont have any. Anyone know what the problem is.

Go to one of the following free scanning sites and get a "second
opinion" as to any possible malware on your computer.

Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck

Msconfig.exe has been disabled by some Group Policy.

Try this.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look in the right hand pane for a value called Disablemsconfig. If the
value exists, double click on Disablemsconfig and set the value to 0. If it
doesn't exist, right click in the right pane and select New, DWord value.
Name it Disablemsconfig and leave it set at 0.

You may also want to investigate the following registry keys for a
Disablemsconfig value.

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

from...
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21843287.html

Or just do a Search in the registry for Disablemsconfig.

Open the Registry Editor.
Hit F3.
Paste Disablemsconfig in the Find What box.
Click the Find Next button.
To keep searching if it finds Disablemsconfig, hit F3 again.
Keep hitting F3 until you see the Finished searching through the registry
message.

msconfig is intended to be used as a troubleshooting tool not a startup
manager.

Get one or both of these to use instead of msconfig.

[[StartMan is an extended 'msconfig' Startup Manager, designed to take
control of all those pesky programs and background services that load and
run at logon - most of which you probably don't need. As well as providing
the usual trouble-shooting options to enable or disable startups, StartMan
also permits the removal of startups.
Duplicate Detection and Removal, a unique feature of StartMan, can be
configured to remove all duplicates automatically, with or without
prompting.
Orphan Detection and Removal. As above, for orphaned startups.
Executable Detection and Removal. As above, for executables.
Includes a full range of sorting options to make it easier to locate a
specific startup - by name, by filename - even by command line parameter! ]]

Startup Control Panel is another pretty good application.

[[Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to
easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple
to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden your
system. A valuable tool for system administrators!]]

Download the EXE Version and just extract the executable wherever you want.

Jackie,

Use services.msc *NOT* msconfig.exe!

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK

<quote>
Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?

The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable
services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console
(services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is
disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no
reason exists to justify disabling "everything."

Jackie.

This error can occur while trying to use msconfig to disable the True Vector
Internet Monitor service (vsmon.exe)...
An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.
You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified
changes.

An access denied error was returned while ATTEMPTING to change a service

If you have ZoneAlarm.

<quote>
I had this problem. It went away if I didn't load Zone Alarm, so that was
the problem. I stopped it by turning off the "OS Firewall" in Zone Alarm: Go
to Program Control > Main and press the first "Custom" button from the top.
Uncheck "Enable OS Firewall". (With thanks to chiawaikian on the ZA
forum -see

Chris

See my earlier post; I've found a better fix. In ZA, go to Program Control,
Programs tab, find System Configuration Utility (it's under that, not
msconfig) click on the single green bar in the Trust Level column, and
change it to Trusted (2 green bars) - Chris

Just when messing around with Services in msconfig?

Or for anything that you try to do with msconfig?

There might be something goofy in the registry.

Try this.
Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to this key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig

1. Right click on the MSConfig folder in the left hand pane and click on
Export.
2. Export Registry File dialog should open.
3. Click on the Desktop icon on the Places Bar (the left hand pane).
4. Type: msconfig in the File name box.
5. Click On the Save as type V button.
6. Select Text Files (*.txt).
7. Click the Save button.
8. Close the Registry Editor.
9. Locate msconfig.txt on your Desktop and double click it.
10. Hit Ctrl + A to select all of the text.
11. Hit Ctrl + C to copy all of the text.
12. Paste that text into a message and post back.

If somehow msconfig got saved as msconfig.reg, right click it and rename it
to msconfig.txt and click YES to the prompt that pops up.

Try rolling back to IE6 and see what happens. I do not use IE7, but it
seems to cause all sorts of problems.
