I am an extreme novice at computing and am having difficulty solving an issue
with the msconfig program. My goal is to stop some of the programs from
starting up and running in the background when I start the computer. I get
to the appropriate selectioon area fine, uncheck the programs, click apply
and then as asked restart the computer. When it starts it advises me I am in
diagnostic mode and to avoid this I must go back and click "Normal
startup"???? How do I just disable a couple programs and startup in normal
mode..? Thanks

After restarting and the box comes up saying that you are using the
diagnostic mode, click the box in the bottom corner that says do not show
this dialogue box on startup and that should solve your problems.
Hope this helps

It does not actually mean what it says. What it means is that you have
tinkered with the start up programs. In other words you have accomplished
what you want. Just tell it not to display the message again and you have
finished.

After making any alterations in MSConfig and then restarting your machine
this 'troubleshooting mode' message always appears. To disable it simply
click on the box on the bottom left of the screen and then press OK. This
will disable the screen. However, you should be aware that the next time you
'tinker' with MSConfig the 'troubleshooting mode' screen will return.

No one mentioned that msconfig is basically a diagnostic tool. If
you need to stop something from starting you should first look
at the program. Right click the icon in the system tray and look
to see if the program has a setting that tells it to startup and
put an icon in the system tray. Secondly check your startup folder
for shortcuts. A short cut there will start the program at boot up.
Just delete the shortcut and the program will stop loading.
Startup folder is usually at:

C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

to get rid of them permanently, you have to find the location mentioned in
the registry using command "regedit". then delete the entry.

Could be wrong here but OP indicated "extreme novice". Don't think a
recommendation to mess with the registry is appropriate. Especially
considering your vague instructions.

Start>Run> regedit
locate referenced location found in msconfig

Only way to permanetly remove nuisance startup applications.

if extreme novice, i guess you'll have to live with altering msconfig.

Msconfig is designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a "startup
configurer." To cease the selective startup notifications, either
return your settings to the way they were, or permanently remove the
undesirable programs from your startup configuration.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

I've found this little freeware utility very useful.

You've already received several answers to the question you asked,
but there's an important point I haven't seen (so far):

If you have a program you don't want to run at startup, before_ you
mess with MSCONFIG look at the program's own Preferences or Options
screen. Most of the better ones will have a check box for "start when
Windows starts" or similar. If you can find such a setting and change
it, you are less likely to have unexpected problems.

So you should use MSCONFIG only for programs that don't provide their
own way to run/not run at Windows startup.

Actually, there's a better alternative to MSCONFIG, the free Autoruns
[1] program from Sysinternals. It has a very nice feature of letting
you right-click on an entry and automatically Google it, so you can
(usually) determine which things need to keep running and which
don't.
